mizunohashi / 2024
Until 1965, the Yodobashi Water Purification Plant was located here. In order to prevent epidemics, the development of water infrastructure was urgently needed as the city grew, and the water flowing from the Tamagawa Aqueduct supported the lives of Tokyo residents. Today, the area has been transformed into a city of buildings that makes use of the reservoir structure, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building stands tall, making it a place where a diverse range of people intersect.
I wanted to create a large wave of water in this place, combining the patterns related to water that I have collected so far, as a landscape of lost memories. In Japan, water is something that we use in our daily lives, and it is sometimes an object of awe. The patterns of water collected from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period express various emotions, such as strength, flexibility, and transience.
Here, tourists from different countries and regions and people living in Tokyo intersect every day, and countless memories are accumulated. I wanted to create a time and space that represents the meaning of this place by expressing the large waves that mix and connect people, memories, and cultures.
